CAUCUS NIGHT 2026!

Caucus Night Details

  • Date: Monday, March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day!)
  • Democratic Party Location: SUU – Sharwan Smith Student Center, Starlight Room @ 6:30 PM, registration at 6:00
  • Any voter can participate regardless of party affiliation as long as they do not participate in the Republican caucus night (which will be held on the same night).

What Happens at Caucus Night

  • Attendees break into groups based on voting precinct.
  • Each precinct elects local leadership:
    • Precinct Officers are the grassroots organizers in the Democratic Party. Each precinct has an opening for a Chair, and Vice-Chair. Together, Precinct Officers work to organize their neighborhoods. The County Party provides training and tools to help you organize your neighborhood along the way so you always have support. Precinct Chairs and Vice-Chairs also serve on the County Party Central Committee, which is the governing body of the County Party.
    • Precincts nominate delegates for the next stages of the process.
      •  A delegate is an elected representative to the county political party from their precinct. Delegates are elected at the Precinct Caucus meetings. Any registered voter who will be age 18 by the general election and has lived in Utah at least 30 days immediately before the next election can be a delegate.
      • Delegates represent their precinct and attend & vote at all County Party Conventions.
      • Depending on the county you live in, a county party delegate may also be a state party delegate. Contact your county party to determine the process for becoming a state delegate.
      • Delegates assist Precinct Chairs with political organizing in their legislative district.
      • Delegates vote on the content of their party platforms and governing documents.
      • Other Things to remember:
      • Delegates are elected for two-year terms.
      • Each county is allocated a specific number of delegates, and
      • Delegates can attend free training on how to make a big impact as a neighborhood organizer – beyond just voting at Convention.
      • What are the responsibilities of a County Party delegate?
      • Attend and vote at ALL County Party Conventions and give prompt notice to the Precinct and House District Chair if unable to attend. (Time commitment is about 10 hours per year.)
      • Assist the Precinct Chair with political organizing at the precinct & legislative district levels.
    • Hint: if you don’t always like the choices you see on your ballot, it might be in part because you aren’t participating at caucus night!
    • You’ll meet neighbors and learn how the local political process works.
